Landing in Cairo, Egypt, early evening – Egypt Air

Travel is a very personal experience.

Are you drawn to some places and not to others?  I’ve often wondered why we drift to some cities or countries, adventures and experiences while not to others.

There are so many types of vacations – historical, adventure, culinary, outdoor, spa, cruise, and a beach with a good book to name only a few.

Mike and I have made our homes in Calgary and Kelowna.  We spend time near the rugged Canadian Rockies and the sun kissed Okanagan Valley.  And our best travel memories have been very close to our homes as well as many flights and hours away.

Returning to a familiar place is comfortable: The Chateau Lake Louise, the Colonna Palace Hotel in Rome, or the Bellagio in Vegas.

Stretching beyond comfort, we’ve landed in Sharm el Sheik, Egypt on a dark night and didn’t think to book a car.  So focused on diving in the Red Sea as a family some things were overlooked.  And 5 incredible days we will never ever forget………not one of us.

Generally, we travel overseas with the same friends.  Walking kilometers every day through ancient towns or bustling tourist cities only to return to a Villa and cook our own meals.

We have travelled with grandchildren and had more pleasure from seeing Micky Mouse and a pool than we ever thought imaginable.

Mike is drawn to some places that I am not, so he goes for a little side adventure for himself.  I indulge in girls’ weekends whatever those may look like.  And trouble they may be!

After a year + of Pandemic, we have had to rely on our memories, pictures, Zoom calls and endless texts “remember this?”.

If we were to give you one word of advice, go where you want, stay within your comfort zone……..and push it outside the limit too……take lots of pictures…….you will never regret that……..and laugh lots………….
