Negroni

Negroni

A Negroni is an acquired taste, another one of Italy’s most popular aperitif’s, served any time of the year!

Negroni

A classic Italian cocktail, you either love Negroni’s or not. It is stirred not shaken and then strained into a chilled cocktail glass – over ice.
Count Negroni of Florence gets the credit for asking his bartender to add gin instead of club soda to his usual “Americano” in 1919.
It’s taken Mike several attempts, but he has finally mastered the Negroni to suit himself. He adds a teaspoon of orange juice; something not usually added to a true Negroni.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz 2 TBSP Sweet Vermouth
  • 1 oz 2 TBSP Gin
  • 1 oz 2 TBSP Campari
  • 1 tsp orange juice
  • Orange rind

Instructions

  • In its truest form, the Negroni ingredients are poured into a cocktail shaker 2/3 filled with ice or a mixing glass; stirred and then strained into a chilled cocktail glass filled with ice.
  • Mike skips the cocktail shaker and simply pours all ingredients over ice in a cocktail glass. Stir and enjoy!

Notes

An aperitif is served before dinner to stimulate the appetite, hence we rarely serve food with it.  If we were to add small bites, we’d start with something salty like blue cheese and thin crackers or salumi to stand up to the bold flavour of the Negroni.
